Some people want to know the background of the author so they can pin the appropriate bias label on him. For those of you so inclined, here is my background.
My name is Jack Mallinckrodt. I am an engineer by inclination, training and experience. BS, ENGINEER, and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford in Electrical Engineering. For the last 40 years I have worked as an independent consultant to aerospace industry and government in the field of radio science as Radio Science and AJM Engineering. Much of that time was devoted to Military Operations Research.
I have never worked for, or accepted pay or reimbursement from any section of the transportation industry nor have any financial interest in it. Now in retirement, the field of urban transportation planning affords a stimulating challenge. It seems to have a great need for, but little use nor understanding of the rigorous methodologies that are more or less standard in Military Operations Research to get "the most bang for the buck" :-)
